Uniform Fabrics and Care — What Lasts and What Ruins It

Polyester, cotton and blends compared for team use, what moisture-wicking actually means, and the washing habits that destroy custom uniforms faster than playing in them.
Fabric decides how a uniform performs, what decoration methods are available, and how long it survives. It is chosen last by most buyers and it constrains almost everything. Polyester The default for performance sportswear, and the only fabric sublimation works on. Why it dominates team sport: polyester is hydrophobic — it does not absorb water into the fiber. Sweat moves along the surface and outward rather than soaking in, which is what "moisture-wicking" describes. The result is a garment that stays lighter, dries faster and does not sag when wet. It also holds its shape, resists wrinkling, survives frequent washing and takes sublimation dye permanently. The trade-offs: polyester holds odor more stubbornly than cotton, because the oils that bacteria feed on cling to synthetic fibers. It is also less breathable in still air — it moves moisture well but does not have cotton's airflow at rest. And it is heat-sensitive, which matters more for care than for wear. Use it for: jerseys, performance tees, anything worn during play. Cotton Comfortable, breathable, familiar. Wrong for play, right for everything around it. Why it fails on the field: cotton absorbs moisture into the fiber and holds it. A cotton shirt in the second half is heavier, colder and clinging. It also dries slowly and loses shape when repeatedly soaked. Where it wins: comfort at rest, breathability in still air, and a hand that people simply prefer. For supporter wear, staff shirts, casual team apparel and anything worn off the field, cotton is the better garment. Cotton takes screen printing and embroidery well. It cannot take sublimation — the dye needs synthetic fibers to bond to and washes out of cotton. Use it for: supporter tees, staff wear, casual apparel. Blends Typically a polyester-cotton mix, aiming for cotton's hand with some of polyester's performance. Blends are a genuine middle ground rather than a compromise nobody wants: more comfortable than pure polyester, more durable and faster-drying than pure cotton. They take screen printing well. The catch for custom work is sublimation. A blend only accepts sublimation dye in proportion to its synthetic content — on a 50/50 blend the result is visibly muted, and it fades further as the cotton portion releases what little dye it held. If you want sublimated designs, you want high polyester content. Use it for: training wear, warm-ups, anything worn actively but not competitively. Fit, stretch and construction Fabric composition is only part of how a garment feels. Two other properties decide whether it works in play. Stretch. Most performance fabric includes a small proportion of elastane or spandex, which is what allows an athletic cut to sit close to the body without restricting movement. A jersey with no stretch has to be cut looser to permit the same range of motion — which is why a close-fitting garment in a rigid fabric is uncomfortable in a way the same shape in a stretch fabric is not. This affects sizing directly. A stretch fabric is more forgiving of a player between sizes; a rigid one is not. If a garment has little or no stretch, the sizing decision matters more. Recovery is the other half of stretch and is easy to overlook. A fabric that stretches but does not return to shape becomes baggy at the elbows and knees within a season. Recovery is what separates performance fabric from fabric that merely stretches, and it is another thing fabric softener degrades. Construction. Seam placement and stitch type decide durability and comfort more than fabric choice does in high-abrasion sports. Flatlock seams sit flush and reduce chafing, which matters in endurance sports. Reinforced seams matter in contact sports, where the garment is being pulled rather than merely worn. If your sport involves sustained grappling or pulling, mention it when requesting a quote. A lightweight performance jersey optimized for wicking is the wrong garment regardless of how good the fabric is. Weight tells you how it will feel and perform, and it is the specification most buyers never ask about. Heavier fabric is more durable, more opaque and holds structure better. Lighter fabric breathes more, dries faster and moves better. Neither is superior — they are different answers to different questions. For on-field performance wear, lighter generally wins. The garment is worn during exertion, often in heat, and weight becomes a penalty. Lightweight polyester dries fast and does not drag when wet. For training and warm-up layers, mid-weight is usually right. These are worn in variable conditions, frequently over another layer, and get more abuse in transit and storage than in use. For off-field and supporter wear, heavier reads better. A substantial cotton tee or hoodie feels like a better product than a thin one, and it is not being worn at exertion. Two practical consequences worth knowing: Light fabric is less opaque. A very light garment in a pale color can show what is worn underneath. For competitive kit this is worth checking, particularly for women's cuts and for white garments. Heavy fabric is harder to decorate finely. A dense knit does not hold small embroidered detail as cleanly, and a heavier or more textured surface can make fine screen-printed lines break up. If your design has small detail, mention it — the garment and the method have to be chosen together. What "moisture-wicking" actually means The term is used loosely enough to be nearly meaningless in marketing copy, so it is worth being precise about the mechanism. Wicking is not absorption. An absorbent fabric — cotton — takes water into the fiber and holds it there. A wicking fabric does the opposite: the fiber itself repels water, so moisture is moved along the surface of the fibers and spread across a wide area where it evaporates quickly. That distinction explains everything else. A cotton shirt in the second half is heavy because the water is in it. A polyester jersey stays lighter because the water is on the outside of the fiber, spread thin, evaporating. Three things follow that are worth knowing before you buy: Wicking is a property of the fiber, not a coating. Genuine polyester wicking does not wash out, because it is the fiber's own behavior. Anything described as a wicking treatment is a surface application and will diminish over time. Fabric softener disables it. This is the single most common way people ruin performance fabric, and it is covered below. Wicking does not mean cool. It means dry. Polyester moves moisture well but is less breathable than cotton in still air. A wicking garment worn at rest in heat can feel warmer than a cotton one; the advantage appears during exertion. What actually ruins custom uniforms Almost all premature failure is care, not wear. Four habits do most of the damage: Heat. The biggest one. High-temperature washing and hot tumble drying degrade synthetic fibers, and heat is what sets and re-activates decoration. Screen-printed graphics crack and peel under repeated hot drying. Wash cold, dry low or hang. Fabric softener. It works by coating fibers with a lubricating film. On polyester that film blocks the wicking channels — the exact property you paid for. A performance jersey washed with softener stops performing. It also traps the oils that cause odor, making the problem it appears to solve worse. Ironing over decoration. Direct heat on a print will melt or distort it. If a garment needs pressing, press inside out and avoid the decorated area entirely. Leaving kit in a bag. Damp polyester in a sealed bag for two days is how permanent odor establishes. Bacteria colonize the fiber and normal washing no longer removes them. Air the garment before it goes in the wash, even if the wash is delayed. A care routine that works - Turn garments inside out before washing — this protects the decorated face from abrasion - Cold wash, gentle cycle - No fabric softener, no bleach - Hang dry, or tumble on low if you must - Do not iron the decoration; press inside out if needed - Air damp kit before bagging it For odor that has already established in polyester, a soak in a half-and-half white vinegar and cold water solution before a normal cold wash lifts it in most cases. Repeat rather than escalating to hot water, which sets it further. Always check the care instructions on the specific product — different materials carry different requirements, and they are listed on the product page. One more habit worth naming, because it is nearly universal and entirely counterproductive: washing kit hotter because it smells. Heat sets odor into synthetic fiber rather than removing it, and it degrades both the fabric and the decoration at the same time. The instinct is understandable and it makes the problem permanently worse. Cold water and a vinegar soak outperform a hot wash on odor, and cost the garment nothing. Caring for a full team kit Individual garment care is straightforward. Managing it across a squad is a different problem, and it is where most programs lose kit. Decide who washes what, explicitly. Kit washed by twenty-five different households will be washed twenty-five different ways, and some of those ways involve hot water and fabric softener. Programs that centralize washing get materially longer life out of a kit. Programs that cannot centralize should at least send the rules out in writing once, rather than assuming the care label will be read. Assume the care label will be ignored anyway. This is not cynicism, it is planning. For youth and school programs especially, specify garments and decoration that tolerate a hot wash and a tumble dryer, because that is what will actually happen. It is why sublimation is the better investment for youth kit — there is no surface layer to destroy. Wash kit promptly, or at least air it. The single worst thing that happens to team kit is sitting damp in a sealed bag over a weekend. Bacteria colonize the fiber and the odor becomes permanent — normal washing will no longer remove it. Keep a small buffer and rotate it. Garments worn and washed less often last longer. A couple of spare units in common sizes means damaged kit can be swapped rather than replaced with a low-volume reorder. Store it dry and loose. End-of-season storage in a sealed container while damp produces mildew, which does not come out. Air everything before it goes away. Reading the care requirements for your specific garment Everything above is general. The specific product is authoritative, and the details differ more than people expect between garments in the same catalogue. Material composition and care instructions are listed on each product page. This matters most in three cases: Blends. The correct care follows the more sensitive component. A polyester-cotton blend does not simply average the requirements of the two. Anything with an applied finish. Water-resistant and windproof outer layers frequently have requirements that contradict normal washing advice. Decorated garments generally. The decoration method changes the care requirement independently of the fabric. A screen-printed cotton tee and a plain cotton tee are the same fabric with different tolerances — the printed one must not go through a hot dryer or take a direct iron. If you are ordering a mixed kit — jerseys, shorts, training tops, supporter wear — check whether they can share a wash. Often they can. Where they cannot, knowing that in advance is far better than discovering it after a combined load. How fabric constrains your design Fabric is chosen before artwork, because it eliminates options: - Cotton or a dark base rules out sublimation entirely - All-over or seam-to-seam designs require sublimation, so require light polyester - A design with gradients or photographs requires sublimation, so requires polyester - Simple one- or two-color logos work on anything If your design is settled and your fabric is not, read sublimation vs screen printing vs embroidery before choosing. If the fabric is fixed, design within its constraints from the start. Matching fabric to the sport Beyond the on-field/off-field split, the specific demands of a sport narrow the choice further. High-intensity continuous sports — soccer, running, field hockey, basketball. Sustained exertion with heavy sweat production. Lightweight polyester, prioritizing wicking and fast drying above everything else. Weight is a genuine penalty here. Contact and abrasion sports — rugby, football, wrestling. Durability and seam strength matter more than breathability. Heavier fabric, reinforced construction. A lightweight performance jersey will not survive sustained grappling regardless of how well it wicks. Stop-start sports — baseball, cricket, softball. Long periods at rest punctuated by exertion, often in direct sun. Breathability at rest matters as much as wicking, which makes a blend or a lighter-weight polyester more appropriate than a dense performance knit. Indoor sports. Climate-controlled, no weather, no sun exposure. Comfort and appearance carry more weight; durability requirements are lower. Cold-weather and outdoor winter play. The garment is a layer in a system rather than a single answer. Base layers wick, mid layers insulate, outer layers block wind.
